At Luana, we support companies in sustainably reducing electrical harmonics and significantly improving power quality. A key element of this is power smoothing using intelligent low-pass filters. This filter technology detects distorted load currents in real time and compensates for them before they can have a negative impact on the grid or any connected devices. By selectively attenuating high-frequency harmonics, the current is “smoothed” and made available again to electrical consumers. This not only reduces thermal stress, but also increases the service life of your machines and minimizes energy losses. For our customers, this means greater grid stability, less wear and tear, and measurably lower energy and operating costs.

Funding from BAFA

BAFA provides funding under Module 3 (MSR, sensor technology, and energy management software) for software and hardware related to the establishment or application of an energy or environmental management system.

Harmonics can impair protective devices such as circuit breakers and residual current circuit breakers, leading to malfunctions or unexpected tripping. This can cause production downtime and additional costs.

In modern industrial plants, many processes run via bus systems or other communication lines. Harmonics in the power grid can affect these signal lines as electromagnetic interference (EMI). This can lead to data errors, signal losses, or even the failure of automated processes—with potentially serious consequences for safety and production continuity.

Automatic online early fault detection identifies disturbances in the consumer network and informs you in real time about anomalies in the power distribution system or on machines. With the help of precise sensor technology and a web-based graphical user interface, the alarm monitoring system offers a modern solution for monitoring your systems. Unlike conventional, local fault detection methods, the system can also detect sporadic faults at different locations and record multiple measurement points simultaneously. Predefined limit values are marked when exceeded or not reached, enabling targeted and uncomplicated alarm monitoring.

The innovative technology of the PowerPulse system reduces energy consumption and improves the local grid quality of electrical systems. At its core is a magnetic field-controlled low-pass filter system that feeds distortions in the grid back into the system in the form of usable energy. The process is suitable for companies in all industries with an annual electricity consumption of 2 million kWh or more.

A PowerPulse system is connected in series between the medium-voltage transformer and the low-voltage main distribution board. This means that the positive effects of the system are felt by all connected consumers. A specially developed transformer, together with the software, forms a unique measurement, control, and regulation technology. This combination reduces losses in the internal grid and improves grid quality.

Distortions caused by harmonics are converted into usable active energy through the interaction of magnetic fields in the PowerPulse transformer.

Electrical harmonics are an increasingly common problem, especially in commercial and industrial settings. Electrical harmonics are caused by non-linear loads such as frequency converters, industrial robots, powerful switching power supplies, or welding equipment, which do not consume electricity in a pure sine wave form. Instead, they generate additional frequencies—known as harmonics—which impair the quality of the power supply and can lead to energy losses, overheating, cable overload, micro-blackouts, reactive power, and a shortened service life of devices.
